STMicro memory chip suits cellphones, GPS receivers

STMicroelectronics has expanded its M29 family of industry standard 3V Flash memories with the release of a 64Mb device that is based on its 0.15?m process. The M29DW640D, which is pin-compatible with competitive Flash memory chips, is suitable for use in cellphones, personal information devices, handheld personal computers, and GPS global positioning receivers.

It can be organized for 8-bit or 16-bit I/O operation and its A, B, C, and D banks, contain 8-, 24-, 24-, and 8Mb, respectively. Each of the two 8Mb banks contains eight parameter blocks and each block can be erased independently.

Other features include a 25ns or 30ns page-read access times, optional 12V fast programming, five fast-program commands, and a 256B extended memory block for storing security or other information. Using one of five fast-program commands, the memory chip's typical time for simultaneously programming up to eight adjacent bytes is 10?s.

The M29DW640D draws no more than 20mA during program and erase operations, 10mA during read operations, and 100?A when in standby mode. It has an endurance of 100,000 program/erase cycles per block and retains data for 20 years.

Operating from 2.7V to 3.6V, the device is offered in TSOP48 or FBGA63 packages with a choice of 70ns or 90ns random access times. Each version is available with either a 0C to 70C or -40C to 85C operating temperature range.
