Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. (TAEC), together with its parent company Toshiba Corp., has announced a wider NAND Flash memory configuration that is expected to reduce the time required to transfer data. The memory configuration features a 16-bit interface instead of the conventional 8-bit wide interface, enabling twice as much data to be transferred per read cycle and reducing the time required to retrieve a page of data by about 50 percent.

Toshiba will initially offer x16 NAND flash memory in a 256Mb device. The NAND flash memory, designated TC58DVM82F1XB00, is targeted for use in cellphones, PDAs, and other mobile electronics devices.

"NAND flash is attractive to cellphone designers because of its low cost per bit, and this new wider configuration helps increase overall system performance by speeding data retrieval operations," said Brian Kumagai, business development manager, NAND Flash, for TAEC.
