The AAT3680 linear battery charge controller from Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. (AnalogicTech) is capable of supporting either a 1-cell or 2-cell Li-ion or Polymer pack battery, and is suitable for consumer portable applications such as PDAs, cellphones, and desktop chargers.

Providing protection features for overcurrent, overvoltage, and temperature protection, the device supports all charging modes including trickle, constant current and constant voltage, and accepts an input voltage of 4.5V to 15V.

Like all Li-ion chargers, the AAT3680 provides a status output to support an LED indicator light for the charging process. The device also features a 1MHz microprocessor serial interface, which transmits to the system chip the state of the battery, whether it is charging, in an error condition or suffering from a temperature fault.

The device is designed to operate with either a pnp transistor or a p-channel power MOSFET, and is available in 8-pin MSOP and 12-pin TSOPJW. The battery charge controller is priced at $1.63 (MSOP-8) and $1.87 (TSOPJW-12) for 1,000-piece quantities.
