Terabeam Inc., a free-space optics systems company based in Redmond, Washington, has won a 15-city contract from Great Wall Broadband Network of Shanghai.

Great Wall provides broadband Internet access throughout China.

Great Wall will install approximately 250 Terabeam links over the next two years. While terms were not disclosed, full national deployment of the Elliptica system from Terabeam could be valued in several million dollars over the life of the contract.

Deployment of the network will begin in Shanghai and Chongqing urban areas, particularly in regions where spans across the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers will prevent physical fiber from being used. The Terabeam network uses millimeter-wave systems at 60GHz to support free-space optical links for metropolitan WAN connectivity.
