Over the last three years, optical modules have been growing in popularity due to declining prices as a result of better yields. In-Stat/MDR, in its report "Optical Modules: Building Blocks for the Future," forecasts the optical module market will expand at a CAGR of 30.5 percent to about $3.5 billion in 2007.

In-Stat/MDR noted that there will be less concerns about quality assurance issues because networking equipment vendors will be purchasing from reputable providers.

"The benefits of using optical modules will merge with a renewed optimism. Companies that make optical networking equipment will choose to use optical modules as they reduce the complexity and difficulty normally associated with creating platforms that can operate at speeds up to 10 billion bits per second," said Eric Mantion, a senior analyst with In-Stat/MDR.
