Macnica Inc. has exhibited an ultraviolet (UV) sensor at the 2003 Embedded Systems Expo & Conference (ESEC) in Tokyo, Japan, which the company claims is the world's smallest UV sensor responding only to UV-A and UV-B waves.

Measuring 2.54-by-2-by-1.1mm, the surface-mount sensor is sensitive to a wavelength range of 270nm to 410nm, and does not work as an illumination sensor as it has almost no sensitivity to visible light.

Mobile phone vendors are said to be considering using the sensor to provide a service that would detect the level of UV light outdoors and advise users of the sunburn risk. By combining the UV sensor with the GPS capability of the users' mobile phones, it would be possible to form a sensor network and create a "UV map."
