According to the June 2003 Express Report by the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted $720 million in orders in June 2003 (three-month average basis), and a book-to-bill ratio of 0.93.

The $720 million bookings figure is just below the revised May 2003 level of $724 million and 39 percent below the $1.17 billion in orders posted in June 2002.

SEMI further reports that the three-month average of worldwide billings in June 2003 was $771 million, four percent below the revised May 2003 level of $805 million and 17 percent below the June 2002 billings level of $927 million.

"Billings by North American-based semiconductor capital equipment suppliers slid to the lowest point since January 2002 as the bookings level stabilized," said Stanley Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. "Higher chip production capacity levels and the higher average chip pricing have lent further credence to the sentiment that the equipment market will begin recovery in the second half of the year."
