The 500DX device from Raytheon Co. combines a radiometric thermal-imaging camera, a handheld iPAQ PDA computer, and a visible-light camera. The industrial-use camera enables engineers, inspectors and managers to detect heat produced by engines, motors or fluids to indicate faulty parts or processes before damage or failures occur.

Incorporating some of the equipment in the company's 500D model, the product offers as a standard feature a visible light camera that allows users to organize and process both thermal and visible images. It also includes the ability to have a simultaneous split screen display that enables industrial managers to view and document the difference between a component's appearance to the naked eye and its appearance when viewed with a thermal imager.

Features of the 500DX include a 35mm focal length lens, an extended calibration range, and an electronic zoom function that increases the view up to 16x with the iPAQ PDA.
