In an effort to take advantage of each other's strengths, International Rectifier Corp. and Sanyo Semiconductor have announced the formation of a joint venture named IR-SA Integrated Technologies.

IR-SA would focus on 'appliance motion control' in its drive to make everyday household appliances more power efficient. These 'white goods' (ordinary appliances such as washing machines) use electromechanical motors, which are not very efficient in terms of power consumption. According to the company findings, more than half of the power households utilize is dedicated to appliances that use motion control. And these appliances have only 15 percent of semiconductors content--the rest are electromechanical products.

The joint-venture company plans to pursue the rapidly expanding market for variable speed motion-control technology being driven by government mandates as well as consumer demand for energy-efficient air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and a host of light industrial equipment by converting electromechanical motors into 'variable speed motor drives' in such appliance.

The new company will pair International Rectifier's proprietary motion control product expertise in power management electronics with Sanyo's packaging integration technologies that utilize its proprietary Insulated Metal Substrate Technology to deliver advanced "plug-in" solutions to appliance manufacturers worldwide.

China bound

IR-SA's new products are developed for 10A and 16A applications; both incorporate a three-phase inverter power gate driver and auxiliary circuitry in a compact, high performance, isolated package. Mainland China, with its millions of consumers bound to purchase electrical appliances, would be a prime consideration in the company's plans for the future.

International Rectifier CEO Alex Lidow said: "IR offers power management ICs for energy-efficient appliance motion control. Through our partnership with Sanyo and their knowledge in high-efficiency packaging and appliance products, the joint venture will set new standards in product features and package outlines."

International Rectifier is one of the leading suppliers of power semiconductors and power solutions, while Sanyo Semiconductor is involved in electronic components manufacturing. Winnie Wong, International Rectifier's director of marketing communications for Asia-Pacific, says that the joint venture is "a product of natural evolution." International Rectifier has already been working with Sanyo on their electronic products for 18 years.

International Rectifier and Sanyo would each own a 50 percent stake in the joint venture.
