The Boomer stereo headphone amplifier from National Semiconductor Corp. is designed for use in applications requiring a single 1.5V battery. The LM916's small size minimizes board space, while the surface mount package maximizes output power in the device.

Suitable for use in portable, one-cell audio applications, and consumer devices such as personal CD and mini-disc players, the product is unity gain stable. It is both a mono differential output audio power amp and a single-ended stereo headphone amp.

Operating on a single 1.5V supply, the mono BTL mode delivers 85mW into an 8-ohm load at 1 percent total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N). In single-ended stereo headphone mode, the amp delivers 14mW per channel into a 16-ohm load at 1 percent THD+N.

Available in LLP chip-scale packaging and MINI SOIC packaging, the amp chip is priced at 97 cents in 1,000-unit quantities.
