Furukawa, Sumitomo to consolidate wireless ops

Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd and Sumitomo Electric Ind. Ltd have reached a fundamental agreement to consolidate their respective wireless technology operations, and subsequently establish a joint venture company.

SEI and Furukawa Electric decided that the drastic measure is necessary to promote rationalization and efficiency, and is needed in order to establish a stable operating basis. The scope of the new business will include the development, production, sales, maintenance, construction, and export of broadcast antennas, fixed communications aerials and feeder components supporting hardware, antenna towers, and station buildings required for construction of these systems.

The 50/50 percent-owned joint venture company is scheduled to start operations in April 2004.
