Rohm Co. Ltd has developed the BU8709KN, a PCM sound generator LSI capable of generating polyphonic hi-fi sounds at CD quality in cellphones, and the BU8899GU, a high-functional chip that includes a Java function to reproduce a number of music pieces simultaneously.

The products feature a sampling rate of 44.1kHz, and are claimed to be the first to provide equalizer and reverb functions for cellphones. The adoption of the equalizer and reverb functions has made it possible for users to make delicate adjustments to the sound quality of the ringing tones according to the speakers and the housing structure of the cell phones.

The BU8899GU provides an API (application programming interface) compatible with Java (MIDP 2.0) standards for the hardware-employed reproduction of four channels simultaneously to support applications.
