ROHM Co. Ltd has developed the BU8709KN chip, a PCM sound generator LSI capable of generating polyphonic hi-fi sounds at CD quality for multifunctional cellphones, and the BU8899GU, a high-functional chip that includes a Java function to reproduce a number of music pieces simultaneously.

The BU8899GU provides an Application Programming Interface (API) compatible with Java (MIDP 2.0) standards for the hardware-employed reproduction of four channels.

Compared with conventional sound generator LSI models, the LSI chips are capable of producing 64 tones simultaneously, and feature a Karaoke function, an ADPCM encoder and decoder, and a user-customized sound function.
