LDOs power processor cores to 0.9V

Micrel Semiconductor has extended its family of low output voltage, high-current low-dropout regulators (LDOs) with the release of the MIC49300 device, which has an output current of 3A and an output voltage of 0.9V.

Responding instantly to any abrupt change in the load current, the LDO requires 400mV headroom, and supports an input voltage as low as 1.4V, allowing for high efficiency conversion from low-voltage, high-current power rails.

Other features include thermal shutdown, current limit protection and ?Cap stability - the ability to use ceramic output capacitors. As a ?Cap regulator, the MIC49300 requires a 1?F ceramic output capacitor for stability and is highly tolerant of any capacitance used on its output.

Suitable for use in PC graphics cards, set-top boxes and digital video recorders, the MIC49300 is offered in an S-Pak 5-lead package, and is priced at $2.60 for 1,000-unit quantities.
