The photo detector IC from Sipex Corp. is designed to support home DVD player systems. With 7 channels and 55MHz bandwidth, the SP8042 has a 10.5mA operating current and -80dBm output noise level. The IC allows for data recovery at low light levels and support for lower reflectivity DVD+RW/-RW media. A built-in media switch selects one of two photo detector arrays, for either CD or DVD modes. Differential offset is <15mV, and group delay is <1ns.

Offered in 16-pin clear COB package, the SP8042 measures 5-by-4mm, and is priced at 70 cents for 100,000-unit quantities, and 55 cents in wafer form. An evaluation board is also available to assist in the evaluation of the device.
