BivarOpto, the Optoelectronics Division of Bivar Inc., has released its SMPT series of surface mount LED devices that is exclusively designed to accept the company's Flexible Light Pipes (FLP series).

The SMPT series claims to expand the benefits of using the FLP series, which introduced a two-piece flexible light pipe system capable of transmitting the light from an LED to a display panel up to 100m away. While the original FLP series provided an adapter for use with SMD LEDs, the adapter still required through-holes in the PCB for mounting purposed. The SMPT series eliminates not only the need for PCB through-holes, but also the secondary post-reflow operations by integrating the adapter and LED into a single surface-mountable package.

Each module can be used as an individual full color pixel in fixed or moving messages, providing the designer with an LED display capable of being extended from 2.5-inch to 100m via the FLP mono-fiber. The modules are encapsulated in 94V-O polycarbonate to provide strength and rigidity, and to allow press-fit installation of FLPs.

Available in all standard colors including RGB, the SMPT will be provided on tape and reel in 500-piece quantities and is priced at 40 cents each in production quantities.
