Tasman Networks Inc. is the latest in a lengthening line of U.S. and European companies to open a development center in India.

Tasman, a six-year-old provider of networking solutions for bandwidth-intensive applications, has so far invested $4 million in the center.

The company expects to invest another $4 million to $6 million to expand the center over the next year. Currently, the center focuses on software development for future Tasman products, but may eventually switch to hardware development, said Paul Smith, Tasman's chief executive.

The center employs about 25 members. Tasman plans to double it workforce in India over the next year and employ about 100 engineers by the end of 2005.

"Our development center in India will provide us with the resources needed to exceed customer expectations. This expansion will not only open the doors for many new opportunities to market Tasman products in India and in the Asia-Pacific and other regions, but will also provide a foundation for future non-engineering operations in India, such as technical support," Smith added.

Cisco Systems also has a sprawling development center in Bangalore, employing about 1,000 engineers. It also has expansion plans.
