Broadcom ships single-chip Wi-Fi solution

Broadcom Corp. has announced that it is shipping what it claims to be the world's first single-chip Wi-Fi solution, the BCM4317. The AirForce One WLAN solution measure as big as a standard postage stamp and consumes 97 percent less power than other Wi-Fi solutions on the market.

Suitable for pocketsize electronic devices, including PDAs, cellphones, digital cameras, MP3 players and other portable devices, the single-chip device integrates a 2.4GHz radio, power amplifier, IEEE 802.11b baseband processor, MAC, Tx/Rx and diversity switches, and all other radio components unto a single silicon die.

The product also offers a comprehensive power management scheme to extend the battery life of small mobile devices. This power management approach consumes an average of 70 to 97 percent less power than existing solutions.
