Sipex Corp. has released its first laser diode driver, the SP8107. Engineered for high performance optical storage drives, the laser diode driver features three channels, a 300MHz on-chip adjustable oscillator, 400mA total output current, and an extended temperature range of -40C to 85C.

The three input channels (one read and two write) are all individually programmable and may be disabled with logic signals. Two selectable outputs enable driving both 650nm and 780nm laser diodes for DVD and CD compatibility. Capable of handling next-generation re-write speeds, the SP8107 offers output current rise and fall time of 1ns.

An on-chip oscillator reduces laser mode hopping during read mode. The frequency value of this oscillator can be set separately for two outputs by two resistors each connected to a RF pin, providing maximum flexibility for system designers.

Other features include a 200 ohm dc input impedance, 100x read channel gain, 250x write channels gain, independent, resistor-controlled swing per output channel, and output current noise of 3na/sqrt-Hertz.

The SP8107 is available in 16-pin SSOP packages and priced at $1.75 in 10,000-piece quantities. An evaluation board is also available to assist in the evaluation of the product.
