Seagate Technology LLC has introduced what it claims is the world's first hard drive (HD) to store 100GB of data on a single 3.5-inch platter. The new addition to the company's Barracuda 7200.7 family achieves a 200GB capacity using two platters, and offers the choice of a Parallel ATA (PATA) or native Serial ATA (SATA) interface.

Suitable for near-line storage applications, Network-Attached Storage (NAS), entry-level ATA servers, mainstream and high-performance PCs and home entertainment PCs, the SATA and PATA models are offered with an 8MB cache and a three-year warranty as standard features.

Available in capacities of 160-, 120-, 80- and 40GB, the HDs can resist up to 350Gs of non-operating shock, and emit <2.5 bels when idle.

The Barracuda 7200.7 hard drive family is capable of supporting SATA Native Command Queuing (NCQ). NCQ will be implemented on production Barracuda 7200.7 SATA hard drives when system architectures that support NCQ become more broadly available.
