The market research firm iSupply Corp. tweaked its outlook for semiconductor sales this year and revealed vendor rankings for 1H of the year, with newly formed Renesas Technology coming in as the third-largest chipmaker in the world.

Worldwide sales should end the year up 9.9 percent, said Dale Ford, VP of market intelligence services. That's up from iSupply's earlier forecast of 9 percent growth over 2002.

"As we go into '04 our current outlook is we will move up into the low teens for growth," Ford said, in an audio interview with EE Times. We'll probably come in at about a 13 percent growth rate. We are not expecting this to be a strong upward swing like we might have seen in a previous forecast cycle."

For 1H of the year, Intel maintained its dominant position atop the world's semiconductor vendor, but Renesas, the combination of logic businesses of Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric, showed up in third place at estimated 1H revenue of $3.6 billion. Rounding out the field were Samsung (No. 2), Texas Instruments (No. 4), Toshiba, STMicroelectronics, Infineon Technologies, NEC, and Philips Semiconductors.

Ford noted that Motorola slipped from the top 10.
