Reporting on Japan's hi-tech industry's performance in the 1H of this year acting chairman of JEITA Hajime Sasaki, who is chairman of the board of NEC Corp., said that "digital consumer products did well and thereby bolstered the sale of electronic devices."

According to JEITA (Japanese Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association) Japan's electronics industry production from January to June grew by 4.7 percent over last year. Earlier this year JEITA had made a projection of 3.6 percent growth for this year's total production.

PDP and LCD TVs grew at over 30 percent, and DVD recorders sales were three times those for the same period last year. Production of electronic devices including semiconductors and LCD panels showed 11 percent growth, about 4 percent higher level than projections at the beginning of this year, according to JEITA.

On the other hand, computers and related peripherals remain stagnant, down 16.4 percent from a year ago. "IT investment by companies has not yet started," said Sasaki.

JEITA does not anticipate a negative prognosis for the rest of this year. "If the current tendency continues, we can expect bigger growth this year than initially expected," said Sasaki.
