Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) Ltd is now shipping in production volumes its Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers that are suitable for use in coarse wavelength-division multiplexing (CWDM) applications.

Available in eight ITU-compliant CWDM wavelengths from 1,470nm to 1,610nm, the transceivers use the company's uncooled DFB lasers and thermal design of devices and circuitry to combine high transmission characteristics and low cost.

Supporting 1.25Gbps GbE, 2.5Gbps STM-16/OC-48, and 2.7Gbps STM-16/OC-48 with FEC, the products achieve transmission distances of 40km with a PIN photodiode receiver or 80km with an APD. To ease application and operation, the transceivers include built-in digital diagnostic functions and operate from a single 3.3Vdc supply. The device also complies with the SFP multisource agreement.

Transceivers for eight additional wavelengths in the 1,300nm region will be available later this year.
