National Semiconductor Corp. has introduced a highly-integrated quad GbE physical layer (PHY) transceiver for multi-port small office/home office (SOHO) switches, high density enterprise switches and router applications. The single-chip PHY leverages an on-chip microcontroller, providing the GbE market with both flexible feature support and protection against future system requirement changes.

The DP83864 4-port GigPHYTER V device makes use of an integrated on-chip microcontroller and enables system developers to customize and enhance their designs. Features like multiple LED control, cable diagnostics, or emerging applications like IP phone detect can be added through software modifications.

At the heart of the DP83864 is the GigPHYTER V core powering the company's 5G Ethernet transceivers. The small and low-power core delivers high performance and good reliability. Each of the device's four fully featured Gigabit ports supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T Ethernet protocols.

The transceiver is offered in a 292-pin PBGA package with evaluation boards and reference designs also available.
