Two formerly independent research conferences - the International Symposium on Hardware/Software Codesign (CODES) and the International Symposium on System Synthesis (ISSS) - will merge into one event scheduled for Oct. 1-3, 2003, in Newport Beach, California.

The newly formed CODES-ISSS will highlight research in system-level design and architecture of heterogeneous embedded computing systems.

CODES-ISSS includes 12 technical sessions involving several dozen research papers. Session topics include system architectural design, design modeling as well as advances in software optimization for power and performance.

The keynote speaker will be Irwin Jacobs, chairman of the board and chief of San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc., who will discuss "The evolution of CDMA wireless devices based on advanced chipsets and BREW." Other invited talks will examine the economics of system-on-chip development, design technology challenges for system and chip-level designs, programming embedded networked sensor systems and transaction-level modeling.

The conference includes panels on system-level tools, systems research and the future of system-level design. Additional special sessions will examine industry best practices in embedded software and challenges and new directions in on-chip communications networks.
