Sharp, SEL merge audio circuitry into LCD panel design

Sharp Corp. and Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) Co. Ltd have announced that they have integrated audio circuitry unto the glass substrate of a system LCD panel, based on their jointly developed Continuous Grain Silicon technology.

The Continuous Grain Silicon technology is the core technology behind the System LCD that developed jointly by the two companies in 1998. Continuous Grain Silicon maintains atomic-level continuity at the crystal grain boundaries, thereby enabling electrons to travel through the semiconductor significantly faster than conventional amorphous silicon and polysilicon.

The companies have integrated audio circuitry unto the glass substrate. The circuitry, which provides system functions beyond image display, is based on establishing new circuit logic technologies adaptable to thin-film semiconductors.

The 4-inch screen has a VGA resolution (640 x RGB x 480 pixels), and the integrated audio circuitry features a shift register, DAC, analog input pre-amp, volume control, and power amp.
