Agere Systems Inc. is establishing a new design center in Australia for next-generation wireless technology development, which is expected to enhance the company's capabilities in IC and software solutions for dual-mode 3G mobile phones. This operation is designed to provide users with complete mobility across multiple wireless networks, as well as broader bandwidth for accessing voice, data, video, and multimedia applications.

The new design center in Australia will focus on silicon and systems development for the 3G (WCDMA/UMTS) communications standard, as well as future standards such as High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). The center is also expected to complement current Agere mobile terminal design operations in Germany, U.K., and the U.S.A.

The company plans to employ a team of about 15 engineers in the Australia center.
