DisplaySearch revealed in its latest Quarterly Desktop Monitor Shipment and Forecast Report that desktop monitor shipments rose 5 percent Y/Y while falling 2 percent Q/Q to 28 million units.

Further, desktop monitor revenues were reported to have fallen by 12 percent Q/Q and 4 percent Y/Y to $7.8 billion, while LCD monitor/LCD PC shipments rose by 44 percent Y/Y, but just by 1 percent Q/Q to 10.94 million units, and a record 39 percent unit and 60 percent revenue share.

Geographically speaking, DisplaySearch reports that LCD penetration was at least 44 percent in Japan, Europe, and North America and below 20 percent in the rest of world (ROW). On a Y/Y basis, ROW and Europe drove shipment growth with North America and Japan down more than 10 percent. By supplier, Dell overtook Samsung to become the top branded desktop monitor supplier for the first time with a 13.4 percent to 13.1 percent share advantage.

Meanwhile, Q2 '03 LCD monitor shipments, which exclude LCD PCs, rose 47 percent Y/Y, but just 1 percent Q/Q in Q2 '03 to 10.7 million units, one million units or 9 percent less than the suppliers aggregate forecast. The cause for the disappointing Q/Q growth was slower than expected standalone shipments. Standalone shipments were flat rather than up 15 percent as projected.

Causes for the poor performance include the impact of SARS on demand as well as supply, lower than expected output from new 5th generation fabs due to yield issues, higher than desired panel and street prices and slower than expected sell-through primarily in Europe in Q1 '03.

DisplaySearch explains that although branded LCD monitor shipments were flat sequentially in Q2 '03, shipments from OEMs and panel suppliers are indicative of a strong Q3 '03. Panel shipments to OEMs rose 16 percent in Q2 '03 and OEMs' shipments exceeded brands' shipments by 6 percent in Q2 '03. Based on these results as well as surveys of panel suppliers, OEMs and brands for Q3 '03, LCD monitor shipments are expected to rebound rising 23 percent Q/Q and 74 percent Y/Y to over 13 million units. The combined LCD monitor and LCD PC unit share is expected to rise to 42.5 percent in Q3 '03 with the revenue share reaching 63 percent.
