Intersil Corp. has announced the Endura ISL6563, a two-phase synchronous-buck PWM controller IC that integrates 2-A MOSFET drivers in a 4-by-4mm QFN package. A high-current CPU core controller for Intel VRM9 and VRM10, the device also targets AMD Athlon, Athlon XP, Opteron, and Athlon 64 processor-based motherboards.

The ISL6563-based power solution operates from a 5V or 12V bus to deliver VID-controlled voltages in a current range of up to 80A. Suitable for desktop PCs, workstations and servers, the product addresses 90 percent of Intel and AMD motherboards that require CPU multiphase power conversion because of its "all-in-one VID" input and on-chip high-current MOSFET drivers. The "all-in-one VID" feature enables hardware designers to interface the ISL6563 with Intel's existing Celeron, Pentium 4 and next-generation processors based on the VRM10 specification.

The ISL6563 includes an overvoltage protection (OVP) scheme, which continuously monitors the output voltage for overvoltage conditions and forces the lower (synchronous) MOSFET to clamp the rising converter voltage. Further reduction in BOM cost is realized because the ISL6563 includes a digital soft start and a logic-level ENABLE pin. These features eliminate an external SS capacitor, and an ENABLE level-shifter circuit, commonly used by competitive solutions.

Suggested resale price for each IC in 1,000-unit quantities is $1.65 for the ISL6563CR.
