SatCon Technology Corp., a developer and manufacturer of electronic power control systems, has been awarded a $1 million contract by the U.S. Department of Energy. Acting through the Sandia National Laboratories, SatCon has been commissioned to develop advanced inverter technology for residential and light commercial photovoltaic and Distributed Energy Resource (DER) applications.

The technology is expected to provide to the photovoltaic industry a reliable and cost-effective inverter and improve the viability of photovoltaic systems for residential and light commercial usage with the goal of helping reduce our national dependency on oil imports. At the conclusion of the contract, SatCon is expected to deliver a prototype hardware that can be used in a modular 5- to 8-kilowatt size system with the goal of introducing this capability into next-generation photovoltaic systems.
