Tohoku Pioneer Corp., a subsidiary of Pioneer Corp., and Universal Display Corp. have entered into an agreement for the latter to provide phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) materials to Tohoku Pioneer for its commercial production of passive-matrix OLED displays. Universal Display has begun shipping its red PHOLED materials to Tohoku Pioneer.

Universal Display develops its proprietary PHOLED materials and technologies with its research partners at Princeton University and the University of Southern California, as well as its commercial development and supply partner, PPG Ind. Inc. According to Universal Display, their PHOLED materials have up to four times the power efficiency of conventional OLED materials, which is very important for battery-operated portable devices such as cellphones.
