The MEMS technology will grow from less than 1 percent of the 1.2 billion microphones sold worldwide in 2003 to 20 percent of the 1.6 billion units in 2006 - a compounded growth rate (CAGR) of 206.6 percent, according to the report "Market Analysis of Acoustic Products: Microphones, Speakers, Codecs, and End-Applications," recently published by The Information Network.

"High on the list of companies offering MEMS technology for microphones and speakers are SonionMicrotronic (Denmark) and Knowles Acoustics (U.S.) based on our analysis of their technology and management teams," said Robert Castellano, president of The Information Network.

Panasonic leads the market for conventional microphones with a 27 percent share of the $571 million market in 2003, followed by Hosiden and BSE. Their market share will erode significantly as MEMs technology grows to one of the largest applications for MEMS. Meanwhile, Chinese companies are also hoping to tap the huge potential of MEMS microphones.

Microspeakers represent another lucrative market for MEMS technology says the market research company. There are 414 million conventional microspeakers sold in 2003 for consumer applications. Again, Panasonic tops the market with an 18 percent share followed by Kingstate Electronics, JL World, and Dain Electronics. Their share will erode as MEMS gets underway.
