Zarlink transceiver chip suits TDMA cellphones

Zarlink Semiconductor has announced that its ZL20200 single-chip radio transceiver is now shipping in volume quantities into South American markets. The cost-effective radio chip suits TDMA cellphones that is a widely used wireless technology in South America.

The ZL20200 transceiver is the only commercial device that integrates TDMA call-receive and call-transmit functions on one chip. This level of integration helps manufacturers shrink the size of the radio portion of the cellphone radio by up to 40 percent and reduce BOM costs.

The product also includes a fractional N RF synthesizer and two IF synthesizers to provide all local oscillator signals required. Flexible programming is provided via a 3 wire serial bus. Additional control pins allow accurate timing control when switching between modes.

The company is developing an enhanced version of the ZL20200 transceiver that will further reduce BOM costs.
