Quake Tech ships 10Gb Ethernet transceiver

Quake Technologies Inc. is looking to ride the wave of 10GbE adoptions in the enterprise sector with the release of a transceiver that can operate over existing 10GBase-LX-4 copper links, as well as emerging 10GBase-CX-4 copper links.

While Gigabit Ethernet continues to dominate port shipments in the enterprise environment, signs over the past year show that 10GbE technology is gaining a foothold. Research firm Dell'Oro Group said in August 2003 that the cost of 10GbE ports was dropping 30 percent quarter-over-quarter.

A big choice for designers of 10GbE devices is whether to have them work over existing LX-4 multimode fiber connections or emerging CX-4 copper-based links. Quake hopes to make that decision easier with the release of the QT2044.

The transceiver integrates four parallel lanes in both the transmit and receive paths that support data rates ranging from 3.125Gbps to 3.1875Gbps, thus allowing the chip to deliver bi-directional 10Gbps support and to comply with the Xaui interface specification. Each lane on the chip includes a receiver, clock- and data-recovery circuitry and lane-to-lane deskew. The chip also delivers programmable equalization capability on the receive side and programmable pre-emphasis on the transmit side.

Designers adapt the chip at the pin level to determine whether it will operate in CX-4 or LX-4 mode. For copper links, the chip can be configured to operate in either the standard CX-4 mode, which enables operation up to 15m, or an extended CX-4 mode, for operation up to 30m.
