Renesas Technology Corp. has announced a Dual Voltage version MultiMediaCard (MMC) capable of operating on either a 1.8V or 3V source, and a Reduced Size Dual Voltage version MultiMediaCard (RS-DV-MMC), for use in digital consumer products such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and digital TVs.

The new dual voltage version can reduce system power consumption and size for 1.8V systems and support existing 3V systems. The RS-DV-MMC, approximately half the size of a standard size MMC, offers a removable card ideally suited to mobile phones and similar small mobile devices.

Both cards support System Specification Version 3.3 standardized for dual voltage capability, etc., by the MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) in March 2003, while offering upward-compatibility with previous specifications.

The 32MB models of both cards will be released in Japan as initial-phase products in March 2004, to be followed by 64- and 128MB models in May 2004.
