Infineon solution provides faster transmission rates

Infineon Technologies AG has developed the Constellation solution, which uses the company's VDSL technology to provide up to 200 times faster in-building transmission rates for Internet, video and multimedia applications.

Together with its partners ViaSat in the US and ZyXEL in Taiwan, Infineon developed Constellation, which provides broadband access to the building via satellite. Within a building, the data is distributed with Infineon's VDSL technology via the existing telephone copper wiring. By deploying Constellation, the time to download a file of 10MB size could be reduced to a few seconds compared to around 20 minutes with a conventional 56k modem.

The transmission of broadband data via common copper wire phone lines is made possible by the VDSL chipset. The chipset is designed for multi-dwelling units and commercial buildings and millions of them have been installed in recent years in switches and modems.

The system is ready for operation in just a few hours as it uses wireless satellite access and the existing copper wiring in the building. The combined data flow for the entire residential or commercial building is received and sent through ViaSat's two-way broadband LinkStar satellite terminal. A receiver centrally installed in the building converts the data received via satellite into the VDSL format and transmits it via the existing phone wiring to the customer premises modems. Both the switches as well as the modems are supplied by ZyXEL and are equipped with the VDSL chipsets.
