MetroPhotonics Inc., a specialist in integrating passive Echelle gratings with active optical devices, has gained an important foothold in Asia markets through a distribution pact with Mitsubishi Corp.

MetroPhotonics, based in Ottawa, Ontario, uses an indium phosphide substrate to combine grating structures with photodiodes and laser sources.

The company, spun from Canada's National Research Council, now is only one of two surviving startups working on Echelle gratings, which offer better multiplexing density than traditional arrayed waveguides. Its competitor is LNL Technology Inc., which acquired intellectual property from the bankrupt photonics firm Nanovation Inc.

Mitsubishi gains rights to three product lines within MetroPhotonics' SurePath portfolio: a 43-channel optical power monitor, a 40-channel dynamic channel equalizer, and a four-channel bidirectional mux/demux device.

Nobuharu Murotani, general manager at Mitsubishi, said that the components will be of particular interest to Japan OEMs working in fiber-to-the-home buildouts, though Mitsubishi also will actively market components in several nations outside Japan.
