Renesas Technology Corp. has announced the 420-output HD66371 and 480-output HD66372 TFT liquid crystal panel drivers for LCD TVs with high picture quality and a wide viewing angle.

Providing a 1024-grayscale, 1.07-billion-color display, the HD66371 and HD66372 are successors to the company's 256-grayscale TFT driver HD66355 for WXGA and HD66358 for WXGA/HDTV, respectively.

The products feature a 10-bit DAC, which minimizes an increase in circuit area and enables a 1.07-billion-color, 1,024-grayscale display to be implemented with virtually the same chip size as a 16.77-million-color, 256-grayscale LCD driver.

The DAC also enables independent gamma settings to be made for R, G, and B by using time division in inputting the gamma reference voltage applied from off-chip. As a result, fine LCD panel color adjustments are possible by means of analog gamma adjustments that cannot be represented by means of digital data processing.

The LCD drive voltage range is 10V to 16.5V, providing compatibility with various kinds of wide-viewing-angle TFT LCD panels. An equalizing circuitry that enables the TFT LCD panel load charge/discharge current to be reduced is used in the LCD drive outputs, resulting in lower power consumption, including the panel.
