Fujitsu Ltd has announced the availability of what it claims as the world's first 2.5-inch hard-disk drive (HDD) with a Serial ATA interface.

Suitable for use in notebook computers and other mobile computing products, the MHT20xxBH HDDs offer spindle speeds of 5,400rpm and storage capacities of up to 80GB. Compared to the parallel ATA interface typically used on 2.5-inch HDDs today, the Serial ATA interface permits faster data-transfer rates.

The MHT20xxBH series is equipped with a SoC that supports the Serial ATA II Phase I specification, achieving a host transfer rate of 150MBps, 50 percent faster than the earlier MHT20xxAH series. With a data density of 10.7GB/cm?, the drive is available in 40, 60 and 80GB capacities to suit a range of customer needs. Power requirement is 5V 5 percent and power consumptions are 2.3W (R/W), 0.25W (standby) and 0.85W (idle).
