Epistar Corp. is planning to increase monthly capacity for AlGaAs Epi-wafer chips to 300 million units by the end of this year. The chips are designed for blue and green LED lamps.

Company Spokesperson Gary Kuo, said, "The company allotted a capital expenditure of NT$500 million ($14.70 million at NT$34:$1) to purchase MOCVD equipment. We plan to have at least six to seven MOCVDs during the first half of this year in a bid to expand our capacity."

Starting the second half of this year, Epistar expects monthly capacity for chips used in blue LED lamps to expand to 120 million units. "We are currently running four shifts a day to meet our monthly target of 80 million AlGaAs Epi-wafer chips."

In addition, the company is eyeing the establishment of a plant at the Science-based Ind. Park in Hsinchu.
