MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. is set to gain full ownership of Taisil Electronic Materials Corp. after entering into an agreement to acquire an additional 55 percent in the Taiwan-based silicon wafer maker.

The acquisition, which is expected to close by early February 2004, will expand MEMC's stake in Taisil to 100 percent. CEO Nabeel Gareeb says the deal will expand their Asian presence and allow MEMC to enhance relationships with customers in Southeast Asia and Mainland China. "In addition, this will increase our access to low cost manufacturing capability that can be easily expanded for either 200mm or 300mm wafer manufacturing because of available infrastructure at this site," he adds.

MEMC, China Steel Corp., Chiao Tung Bank and the China Development Industrial Bank established Taisil in 1994, making it the first manufacturer of 200mm silicon wafers in Taiwan.
