IBM has received $325 million from Sony Group for the production of next-generation 65nm chips. IBM expects pilot production to begin during the first half of 2005 at its 300mm semiconductor manufacturing facility in East Fishkill, New York.

With the investment, IBM will be able to produce in volume quantities their latest microprocessor, code named "Cell," and other chips to be used in next-generation computer entertainment systems, as well as Sony's next-generation digital consumer electronics products.

"Sony Group's investment in capacity at our 300mm facility confirms our mutual commitment to producing volume quantities of the highly-anticipated Cell custom microprocessors," said John E. Kelly, SVP and group executive, technology, IBM Systems and Technology Group.
