According to Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA), Taiwan has produced about 4.3 billion units of super bright blue LEDs, reaching a market value of $830 million, in 2003. This year, PIDA estimates a 20 percent overall market growth for LEDs, with overall value to exceed $1 billion.

With the expected growth, local LED makers United Epitaxy Co., Epistar Corp., Formosa Epitaxy Inc., and Arima Optoelectronics Corp. have announced plans to expand their capacities within the year.

Epistar expects its monthly production capacity to reach 120 million units by the end of the second quarter, and later increase to 200 million units per month by 2005. On the other hand, Formosa Epitaxy anticipates a monthly output of 60 million units next quarter and targets 140 million units next year.

Moreover, Arima Optoelectronics aims to increase its current capacity from 35 millions units to 50 millions by end of this quarter. Similarly, United Epitaxy says it will expand output to 70 millions units this quarter.
