The importance of OLED drivers in TFT apps

Ng: Custom integrated driver ICs have allowed OLED displays to become an accessible technology.

The information display has become the visual interface between humans and systems with CRTs dominating the display market for tens of years. The advancements in technology and manufacture have made CRT a superior display, offering quality color spectrum, contrast, viewing angle, and response time.

But the consumers continued strike for excellence and the engineers' curiosity as well as eagerness have brought new developments on display technologies, such as flat panels and micro, to birth.

Meanwhile, organic light emitting diode (OLED) display is attracting so much attention with its performance in the aspects of contrast, thinness, lightness, power consumption, response speed and viewing angle. The significant characteristics of OLED have paved the way for many companies to invest increasing amounts in R&D and manufacture of this technology.

Like LEDs and CRTs, OLED displays are self-emissive. There is no backlight required and the viewing angle can be very large. OLED is capable of producing different colors covering a visual spectrum. However, despite the much advancement in OLEDs, its duration and reliability is still not as good as mature display technologies like CRTs and LCDs.

OLED is basically a current-controlled device. Its pixel brightness reduces as it is turned on for a period of time. Half brightness lifetimes vary from one or two thousand hours to several tens thousands depending on the material, device structure, color and brightness. As a result, special driver ICs are required for OLED displays.

With the introduction of custom integrated OLED controller driver ICs, OLED displays become an accessible technology. Integrated drivers feature low cost and versatile functions. They embed display memory, timing controller, CPU interface, oscillator, dc-dc converter, brightness control circuits, and segment and common drivers. With proper application techniques, OLED displays can be used in portable applications with small-to-medium size displays.

Advancements in the OLED industry are exciting. Device lifetime and efficiency improves every year. Moreover, TFT-OLED panels and the corresponding driver ICs that are being developed are expected to flourish in the large display market.
