Taiwan optical display production to reach $14.71B in '04

According to Analyst S.Y. Wang of Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA), the production value of Taiwan's optical displays is expected to reach NT$500 billion ($14.71 billion at NT$34:$1) this year.

"TFT-LCD displays will rank as the number one among the displays, and will account for 88.6 percent of the total, with NT$438.5 billion ($12.9 billion) in value," Wang said.

In 2003, Taiwan's optical display production value was worth NT$337.40 billion ($9.92 billion). On the other hand, TFT-LCD displays reached NT$289 billion ($8.5 billion), accounting for 85.7 percent of the total value.

Further, Wang predicts that the demand for LCD monitors for 2004 will reach 70.6 million units; for notebook computers, 41.5 million; for LCD TV receivers, 9.2 million units; and for other applications, 3.5 million units.
