Osram GmbH Munich and Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. Ltd have signed a patent license contract. As part of the deal, Osram granted Samsung a royalty bearing license to manufacture and sell white LEDs with conversion technology, for which Osram holds patents. Typical applications include backlighting for mobile phones.

According to Osram GmbH, the conversion technology for LEDs was developed by the Osram Opto Semiconductors subsidiary. It enables white LEDs to be produced using blue emitting InGaN based chips and a suitable fluorescent converter.

"Over the years, we have built up a very strong position and have a good deal of intellectual property at our disposal" explains Rdiger Mueller, CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors.
