Skyworks powers Compal's next-gen cellular handsets

Wireless Semiconductor company Skyworks Solutions Inc. will supply Taiwan-based Compal Communications Inc. with its iPAC power amplifier (PA) module and direct conversion transceiver to be used in next-generation handsets.

Skyworks' iPAC PA is a small module with integrated power control based on a current-sensing method. Meanwhile, the company's direct conversion transceiver is capable of cutting the number of external components required to build an RF section by more than one-half.

Leveraging an optimized GaAs HBT process for the PA module and a single-chip, silicon-based direct conversion transceiver, Skyworks has developed an RF subsystem. This approach will allow customers to reduce their RF footprint, minimize power consumption and lower their bill of materials for next-generation multiband GSM/GPRS handsets with a clear roadmap to EDGE implementations.
