Japanese companies Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. have decided to combine their efforts in developing advanced 45nm process and design technologies used for next-generation system LSI.

In May 2001, the companies pioneered the 65nm design process technology. They plan to take this process technology to the next level by signing a joint development agreement targeted to be completed by late next year.

With the goal of being the first to market 45nm technology, the project will have a budget of ?20 billion ($189 billion at ?105.38:$1) to be shared by both companies. About 150 engineers from the two sides are expected to work on the project at Toshiba's Advanced Microelectronics Center in Yokohama, Japan and Oita Operations in Kyushu, Japan.
