Motorola Inc. chose the new name for its semiconductor products sector - Freescale Semiconductor.

The name was announced Friday (Feb. 13, 2004) after "interviews and research conducted among the company's employees, customers and industry analysts worldwide," Motorola said.

The spin out of Freescale from Motorola Inc. is expected this spring, with an initial public offering (IPO). In recent years, Motorola's semiconductor products sector has had revenues of roughly $5 billion per year. It is a leader in automotive ICs, microcontrollers, and networking chips.

"Freescale Semiconductor provides customers with a heritage built on 50 years of semiconductor experience," said Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Freescale Semiconductor.

"We're pleased to blend the expertise and stability of an established technology provider with the spirit and fresh vision of a new company. Accordingly, we've created a name that's intended to identify our team's dedication to agility, service and reliability," Anderson said in a statement.
