The Photonics Center at Boston University in the U.S. has opened an Integrated Optics Laboratory which will facilitate in the hybrid integration, device characterization, and measurement of active and passive photonics devices.

Specifically, the 2,400-square-foot lab will develop smart substrates and low-cost hybrid optical components. Its construction was funded by a cooperative agreement with the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, Maryland.

"Integrated optics is an important area with much to offer the current and future Army force," said George Simonis, chief of the Microphotonics Branch at ARL. "The Integrated Optics Laboratory at the Photonics Center will allow research and development of photonic components, as well as the integration of those components into unique prototype devices. The Army Research Laboratory is excited about this new capability and looks forward to working with the Center and its partners to deliver the best products to our soldiers," Simonis added.
